LA PERFECCION DE ANGELITA -- Angelita's perfection

Me propuse hace una "Lone Star" (ver 7/3/2014) y empecé  con ayuda de mi profesora de patchwork, Ana Montes.
Con telas que tenia, y otras que compré y combiné. 
Además de mi profe, busqué ayuda en la Revista American Patchwork & Quilting. En el numero de octubre de 2008, el articulo "Reach for the stars", pag 73, explica cómo hacer una manta "Lone Star", que es inmensa. A propósito, la canción "Reach for the stars" de S-Club 7, que data del 2000, se puede escuchar AQUI.
Bueno, volviendo al tema de las mantas, tuve que adaptar el tamaño a lo que yo iba a hacer, porque la manta que explica la revista es mucho mayor de lo que yo me propuse hacer.
I had in mind making a Lone Star Quilt, and I set out to do it. I started with the help of my patchwork instructor, Ana Montes.
I already had some of the fabrics, I bought others to match.
Apart from my instructor, I found that in the October 2008 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting the article "Reach for the Stars", pg 73, explains how to make a Lone Star Quilt, which is enormous . 
Speaking of "Reach for the Stars", the song by S-Club 7, which was released in 2000 can be heard HERE.

Now back to quilting and patchwork, I had to adapt the size to what I was going to make, as the quilt explained in the magazine was much bigger than what I had in mind doing.


Primera parte:

Los rombos! cortar y coser en diagonal. Todo un desafío!

First stage: the diamonds! Cut and sew on the bias. A challenge in itself!

El siguiente paso consistía en unir las 8 puntas de la estrella...

...Y hacer las estrellitas pequeñas y las medias estrellas laterales, casi más difícil que la estrella grande...
...And make the small stars and half stars on the sides. This was almost more difficult than the big star...

Añadir los cuadrados que van entre las puntas de la estrella. Esto fue lo más difícil.
And then add the squares that go between the star points. This was the most difficult of all.

Pero... ay!! me falta menos de 1 cm para que el borde de uno de ellos quede alineado con el resto. Como no estaba alineado, yo estaba alienada...

But... Oh, no! one of the borders of these squares is not squared up and I'm missing some 1/3" to make it even... As my fabrics were crazily disunited, I myself felt disunited, crazy...  
Lo resolví recurriendo a un arte de la que mi madre - Angela - era reina: el añadido. Añadido que ella hacía de manera prácticamente invisible. Y pensé que yo podría intentarlo...
And so I solved it resorting to an art that my mother Angela was queen of: adding fabrics. And she used to do this in such a way that it was almost invisible. I thought that I, too, could try this...

Y de verdad, casi no se nota. Tienes que mirarlo MUY de cerca para darte cuenta... 
And truly speaking, it can almost go unnoticed. You have to look at it VERY closely to notice it.

Ya casi está... ahora los marcos para realzar la estrella central y ya está la parte de arriba terminada. Lo que en inglés se llama "piecing", el verdadero trabajo de patchwork. Faltan los marcos alrededor, pero lo difícil está hecho.
We are almost there... Now the borders to enhance the central star and the piecing of the top is finished. I'm still missing the borders all around, but the most difficult part is done.

¿Y ahora? Qué hacer con la parte de arriba, muy bonita, pero para que sea manta, colcha, para que abrigue, ¡hay que acolcharla!!!
And now? what am I to do with this nice top. For it to become a quilt and be warm, it needs quilting!! 

Tapa de arriba, relleno de guata (¿Qué guata elijo?), tapa de abajo (Qué color?) Es fácil decirlo, pero hay que hacerlo.
Y ¿qué diseño lleva el acolchado?
Top, batting or wadding filling (what kind of batting?) and back (What colour?). Easy to say, but it has to be done.
And what design quilting? 

Aproveché las vacaciones y desde donde estábamos nos "estiramos" unas 800 millas (creo que más...), desde Lubbock, Texas (National Ranching Heritage Center), pasando por Roswell, Nuevo Mejico, luego Denver, Colorado, para asistir al Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival en Loveland (¿no es un nombre adorable, "la tierra del amor"?), al norte del estado de Colorado.
I took advantange of the summer holidays and from the place we were visiting we "stretched" a further 800 miles from Lubbock, TX (National Ranching Heritage Center), past Roswell, NM, then Denver, CO, to attend the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival in Loveland  (isn't it a lovely name?), in the north of Colorado. 

Aparte de lo que significa asistir a uno de estos festivales: compras, demostraciones, exposición de colchas, rifas, contacto con gente, se ofrecían actividades para "meter mano". Entonces me apunté al cursillo, o taller, llamado "Acolchado Deseado"("Desired" Quilting") impartido por Debbie Wendt.
Cuando uno hace una colcha o manta, en las instrucciones se suele indicar al final "acolchar como se desee". Pero... ¿Cómo lo deseo? 
Apart from what it means to be at one of these festivals: buying, demos, quilt exhibition, raffles, getting in touch with people, "hands on" activities... I took a course, or workshop called "Desired" Quilting" taught by Debbie Wendt.
When making a quilt, instructions usually indicate you to "quilt as desired". But... How do I desire it to be?  

Además de saber acolchar hay que saber qué diseño usar para la colcha para que resulte armónico, realce el trabajo del patchwork y las telas, combine con los colores de la manta y responda al uso que se le va a dar.
So, on top of knowing how to quilt, you need to know what design to use on your quilt, so that the quilting is in harmony with the rest, enhances the piecing and the fabrics, combines with the quilt colours and is in accordance with how the quilt is going to be used.   

Así que al cursillo llevé la parte de arriba terminada, pero aún sin acolchar, parecido a como se ve más arriba (faltan los marcos).
So I took the bare quilt top to the workshop, which was similar to what is shown above (borders missing).

A lo largo de la clase se hicieron sugerencias y propuestas sobre cómo acolchar la parte de arriba que cada uno llevaba. Tomé nota y volví a casa dispuesta a ponerme con ella...
During the class, suggestions and proposals were given on how to quilt the top each of us took. I took down notes and once at home, I got ready to do it.

Me ocupé de aprender la técnica del acolchado mediante dos cursos online, ambos de Craftsy :
"Acolchado a máquina: libre y más" con Wendy Butler Berns 
y luego 
"Cómo acolchar mantas grandes en una máquina de coser pequeña", con Ann Petersen.
I set out to learn quilting by means of 2 online Craftsy courses:
"Machine Quilting Free Motion and More" with Wendy Butler Berns, and later "Quilting big projects on a small machine" with Ann Petersen.

Bueno, y ahora ¿qué nombre le pongo? 
And the name? What name shall I give it?

Mi madre se llamaba Ángela, y me pareció de justicia ponerle en su recuerdo, y por hacer surgir en mí la solucion del trocito imperceptible que corrigió el defecto, "La Perfección de Angelita". 
My mother's name was Angela, and I found it only fair to name the quilt to honour her memory, as the solution came up to me because of her: that almost unnoticeable strip that corrected the flaw. So, "Angelita's Perfection".

Bordado a maquina con hilo ligeramente dorado. Machine embroidered with a slightly golden thread.

La que no es perfecta soy yo! 
The one who's not perfect is me!
